Diversity & Inclusion – Gippsland Community Leadership Program

In growing Gippsland’s leaders, the Gippsland Community Leadership Program is providing its 2020 participants with access to a rich and diverse field of experienced and knowledgeable leaders, mentors, advocates and advisors.

This year’s GCLP Diversity & Inclusion workshop is a key element of the overall leadership program and the group was fortunate and privileged to hear from, and interact (online) with five experienced and knowledgeable leaders who contribute in so many ways locally, nationally and internationally.

GCLP 1 Duncan Smith - Diversity & Inclusion – Gippsland Community Leadership Program

Duncan Smith ADC Associates

Duncan helps leaders build trust, hold open and honest conversations, make more inclusive decisions, build high functioning teams, use the power of diversity to solve problems, and build stronger working relationships. He has worked in 24 countries across four continents, with clients including numerous multi-national companies; local, state, and national governments; non-profits; and academia. 

Duncan has trained in multiple Instructional Design and Action Learning methods. A member of the Expert Panel for the Global Inclusion and Diversity Benchmarks since 2011, in 2018 he released the book Foundations of Diversity

GCLP 2 Dean Sutton - Diversity & Inclusion – Gippsland Community Leadership Program

Dean Sutton Parks Victoria

Dean is a proud graduate of GCLP 2019. He is an active community member of Glengarry and district and is focused on building capacity and enabling rural areas to be sustainable into the future by strengthening business, services and volunteerism. Dean is a leader of change in Gippsland, driving diversity, inclusion and equity through education and visibility.

Involvement in the North Gippsland Football Netball League Gippsland Pride Cups, the Place Based Suicide Prevention Program, the first Pride in Tennis event in Australia with the Traralgon Tennis Association, and community education sessions, are just some of Dean’s contributions in giving back to the community.

Working in State Government across Eastern Victoria Dean travels all over Gippsland and feels passionate about the future and what Gippsland has to offer.

GCLP 3 Farhat Firdous - Diversity & Inclusion – Gippsland Community Leadership Program

Farhat Firdous Latrobe Community Health Service

Farhat is a participant in our current GCLP and received a scholarship through AGL’s Diversity Scholarship. She is a skilled migrant from Pakistan, a mother and a Gippslander. Having worked in diverse roles within the non-profit sectors of Pakistan and Australia, Farhat brings with her an in-depth understanding of the human services sector, especially family violence, gender mainstreaming, mental health, and settlement.

Currently, Farhat is the Multicultural Strategic Engagement Coordinator for Gippsland and works collaboratively with local services to create opportunities and appropriate service responses for improved settlement outcomes in the region. She started her governance career a few years ago and is a board member of West Gippsland Healthcare Board and committee member of Warragul Community House.

Farhat is an advocate for social inclusion and social cohesion and enjoys being an active member of the community.

GCLP 4 Beau Vernon - Diversity & Inclusion – Gippsland Community Leadership Program

Beau Vernon Motivational Speaker, Director, Ambassador

Beau is an inspirational speaker, current Director of Interact Australia, Ambassador for Wings for Life World Run, Pride of Australia Medal Holder, premiership-winning football coach and proud husband, father and Gippslander.

On June 23rd, 2012 Beau’s life changed forever when a normal incident during a normal game of Aussie rules football left him with C5-C6 quadriplegia. In an instant, he went from a 23-year-old who never sat still, to spending 8 months in hospital and looking at the prospect of spending his life in a wheelchair. Before the incident, he played any sport and would be up for any outdoor activity and even quit a commerce degree at the thought of sitting down to work all day.

“I reckon there was a moment when subconsciously I decided, all right, I can’t change what’s happened, I can only control the future and my attitude towards it,” (The Age 11/04/19). Beau has used the physical and psychological challenges and achievements of adapting to his changed life as a tool to overcome adversity and help others.

GCLP 5 Grattan Mullett - Diversity & Inclusion – Gippsland Community Leadership Program

Grattan Mullett Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC)

Grattan Mullet is a local Gunaikurnai man who grew up at Lake Tyers. Gunaikurnai people are the traditional owners of Gippsland. There are approximately 3,000 Gunaikurnai people, with territory including the coastal and inland areas to the southern slopes of the Victorian Alps.

Grattan was the Cultural Officer/Manager Cultural Business at the Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-operative (GEGAC) for 12 years.

Grattan has been a Chair of the East Gippsland Aboriginal Community Development Employment Program, a member of the GLaWAC Board and was a member of the GEGAC Board of Directors and currently works at GLaWAC as the General Manager, Culture.
