Our History – Yesterday and Today

Our Beginnings

In the mid-1990s Victoria, and specifically Gippsland, experienced significant change. It was an era when collectively Gippsland communities recognised a need for strong leadership across the region. The Gippsland Community Leadership Program was established to respond to that need. It was the first community leadership program of its kind in regional Australia and was supported by a dedicated and collaborative approach in which local government, business, industry and community came together to benefit the region.

Gippsland Community Leadership Program (GCLP) was formally established in 1996, it is the longest running regional leadership program in Australia and has had over 600 graduates complete the program over the past twenty-three years, including well known identities such as Ken Lay, AO APM (ex. Victorian Police Commissioner), Senator Bridget McKenzie, multiple local Gippsland Councillors, Mayors and business leaders.

Where we are today

Today there are in excess of 600 participants/graduates of the program, many are still living in Gippsland, others have moved beyond the region with a number becoming significant leaders at a state and federal level. GCLP graduates can be identified in current or former leadership roles in local government, business, industry and community organisations including the arts, environmental and sporting associations throughout the region.

Today GCLP is auspiced by the Committee for Gippsland (C4G) and is one of 10 regional community leadership programs currently supported by State Government and local sponsors/partners. The 10 programs work collaboratively under the Regional Leadership (previously Victorian Regional Community Leadership Program), attending an annual state-wide program day in Melbourne and sharing ideas and some administrative resources.
